The Vindicators on their ship

The return of the Vindicators will be celebrated at San Diego Comic-Con. The show's superhero squad first appeared in the show's season three episode "Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender", which inspired a comic.

io9 talked to the writers of The Vindicators before the panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. The duo returned to showrun and executive produce the digital series for Adult Swim's YouTube channel with the original voice cast.

The idea to continue the adventures through comics and digital shorts was sparked by the pitch you made for Vindicators.

Sarah Carbiener: Adult Swim approached us about rekindling the Vindicators, and we were so excited because in the Rick and Morty episode there is a lot of back story. The idea was to explore more of who these guys are and how they move through the universe.

The format is so small that you can explore things that other shows don't because you're not trying to shove it into a very standard plot. At some point, a plot becomes the same plot. For the first time, we can go crazy because we have a very short format.

There are a lot of ways that the show pokes fun at pop culture. Vindicators does a lot of things that are in other places. I think it is funny because we have a show coming up that is about a character who died in a movie and now they are going to do their origin. Do you think the state of genre affects your take on these characters?

One of the things that was great about these was that you could step away from traditional plots. The moments behind the genre and out of the genre were explored. It's not a typical superhero thing. We tried to get away from the constraints of how superhero are depicted and the kind of things we get to see them do. It's like a slice of life. We thought outside the box.

A lot of that was based on their unique powers and physical make up. Imagine if you were made of one million ants and had a secret life. If you are an exploding star or a person who can ghost trains, what kind of relationship would you have? Which is something all of us would relate to.

Do you think that the mini series might inform the possibility of the Vindicators' own?

Being like this is going to be its own strange little beast was part of the fun. It would be hard to go into a full spinoff territory. It might be a super creative way to tackle it. What have we not seen before?

They don't have a lot of way to move forward if we were to go down that path. If they are going to be a crazy, awesome spin-off, we need to find a way to go back. There are fresh stories from earlier on. The way we've been working on these characters makes it difficult to destroy them completely.

The voice cast that is assembled for this is very good. I wonder if it was easy for Christian to return as Vance. Did the other Vindicators immediately start playing?

Christian is a big fan of Rick and Morty. He was so excited that it was so enjoyable. We died as children of the '80's.

It was that kind of thing where you were in your room, and then you turned off your computer, and Christian was in the Zoom box, voice recording and stuff, and you were like, "Was that?" Is that the case? This is crazy.

It was great to have everyone back from the original, like Lance Reddick. It was a pleasure to work with them again. It is so enjoyable to make them do crazy things. Brain from Pinky and the Brain just make noises for 20 minutes. How many times a year do you get to do that?

Heathers was one of the first movies I ever watched, and I am a big Christian Slater fan. Do you have any tales of how deep you were into the fandom?

Carbiener said that Heathers was like a sleepover movie for him when he was a kid. The cast recordings from the musical are in my possession. A bigHeathers fan.

I still like Reality Bites more than any other thing. I still have the ability to quote the whole movie. Even now approaching being much older, it is still just so much a part of the process.

Carbiener is just thinking about the first ones. I found out who David Bowie was from the show. I can say a lot about that film. I watch it now and I am amazed at the lack of plot. I think I would have attacked you if you had told me that it wasn't the best movie ever made. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek are other things.

With Comic-Con coming up have you participated in cosplay or themed events?

When I went to the last Comic-Con, I was seven months pregnant and I wore a costume. The people were confused about it. My costume was made by my husband. It was a great time.

Both of us have small children and we dress them up as The Boys. It was Halloween before last.

I have to do something about this because she is very blond. She was so Homelander looking that she was a year old.

Carbiener tried to do a Butcher beard for my daughter, but I don't think she's old enough yet. My mother-in-law made all the costumes, but she wanted to make her dress as well. It's very cute. My toddler has done morecosplay than me.

The Vindicators will premiere on Adult Swim.
