For the first time ever before Congress, an abortion rights advocate described how to self-manage the procedure using pills.

The founder and executive director of We Testify spoke during a House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations panel hearing. Panelists discussed the impact of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark ruling guaranteeing abortion rights nationwide.

Sherman talked about how she contemplated throwing herself down the stairs when she was pregnant. She drank an unsafe amount of alcohol and hoped it would cause a baby to be born.

When it was legal in every state, that was when it happened. She said that she knows some will try the methods she used. According to the World Health Organization, there are safe ways to self-manage abortions.

Mifepristone and Misoprostol are more effective and safer than any other drug.

Sherman explained how to take the medicine.

A single pill followed by four pills dissolved under the tongue within 48 hours or a series of 12 pills dissolved under the tongue every three hours. A person doesn't need to tell police what they took because there's no way to test it in the blood stream.

A self-managed abortion is an abortion conducted outside of a traditional health care setting when a person obtains abortion pills without a doctor's help. According to Bracey Sherman, people can get the drug outside of a doctor's office and have an abortion like the one done at clinics around the U.S. up until the 12th week.

Legal experts say that self-managing your own abortion is not a crime in the U.S.
