Fred Warner believes that second-year quarterback Trey Lance is ready to be the leader of the 49ers.

Warner praised Lance and explained why he thinks he can become the Niners' starting quarterback.

I guess you could say that all the pressure people are trying to put on him, how much I admire the way he has taken on just all the criticism. With how young he is, he has been very professional about it. For his age, he is very mature.

"Just the things that you see from him and the small things that everybody else outside of the building sees from him, that should give you a good sense of maturity for such a young player, and if given the reins, the way that he would handle it." I can tell you how good of a person he is. I have already talked about that. I'm pretty sure that he's ready for it if he's given the reigns. He's mature and ready for anything.

Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been the subject of trade rumors and is expected to be replaced by Lance.

Jimmy G has been the 49ers' primary starter for parts of the past five seasons, leading them to the Super Bowl in 2019.

The Niners moved up in the draft to take Lance third overall in 2021, after Garoppolo missed most of the season due to injury.

Lance's arrival seemed to spell the end for Jimmy G, although he took the 49ers further than anyone expected.

Garoppolo has won 33-14 as a starter and 2 Super Bowls as the backup to Tom Brady, but he has never put up gaudy numbers.

In 15 regular-season games, Garoppolo threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdown and 12 picks, but he had just 535 yards, two touchdown and three picks in the playoffs.

Lance was drafted by the 49ers because Jimmy G is more of a game manager than a quarterback who can win games on his own.

Lance showed off his special skill set at the collegiate level, even though he only started for one year, despite being one of the most electric talents in the NFL.

He completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,866 yards, 28 touchdown and no turnovers, while also rushing for 1,100 yards and 14 scores for the North Dakota State team that went perfect in 2019.

Lance made two starts in place of the injured Garoppolo last season and went 1-2. He completed 57.7% of his passes for 603 yards, five touchdown and two pick ups.

Lance adds a new element to the San Francisco offense that Garoppolo has never been able to provide due to his ability to make plays with his legs.

If the 49ers find a way to keep wide receiver Deebo Samuel despite his trade request, Lance is the perfect fit for him under center.

Few quarterbacks in the league have as high of a ceiling as Lance does due to his lack of experience.
