Russia's attitude to homosexuality has been criticized by a tennis player who came out as gay.

The world's 12th ranked woman reached the French Open semi-finals.

Speaking to Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko on Youtube, she confirmed she has a girlfriend.

There are a lot of taboo subjects in Russia. It's no secret that some of them are more important than ours.

She said that it wouldn't be safe to hold hands with her boyfriend.

  • The Russia striker speaking out against war in Ukraine

The invasion of Ukraine resulted in the banning of Russian and Belarusian players from Wimbledon. Both countries allow their players to compete on the tennis tour, but not under their national flags.

She said that she wanted the war to end and that it was a nightmare.

Russians can't use the word war to describe the invasion, with Putin coining the term "special military operation".

When asked if she was afraid she said, "Yes, I think so."
