Even though it is attempting to make some allowances, the new plan that it is pursuing to crack down on password sharing between accounts is no less annoying than the others.
In some South American countries, you will be allowed to sign in on a TV outside your home for two weeks, but if you don't pay, you'll be blocked from the service. The price seems to be more than what you already pay per household.
The account activity and device IDs are used to detect the home. You have to make sure that everything is on the same network and that you don't use a virtual private network to get around.
This new version of the plan with the two week allowance is supposed to allow for use when traveling, which was a frequent complaint about the previous version of the plan.
I wonder if this is the best use of the company's time, resources and goodwill during this somewhat fraught era for them, as they want more people to subscribe rather than sign up with shared info.
Password sharing is not unique toNetflix, or even streaming services as a whole (thanks for the WSJ login info dad!), but you do not see competitors orchestrating grand plans to cut off sharing like the company seems determined to do here. The company may be able to see some level of conversion if other households are added for a few bucks, which is certainly a better deal than the full asking price, but I have heard people say that this doesn't make a lot of difference.
If the idea is that a family of six needs to pay $26 to have two of its kids living outside the house be added, why isn't there a discount for single people? You wouldn't expect a discount, as that's not how these things work, but it seems that netflix wants to push it the other way
What appears to be the main problem it keeps dancing around is that on the whole, it is more expensive than most other streaming services when it comes to quality. Password sharing is just one of many forms of price increases.
I don't think this is going to go well when it's implemented around the world. We will see what happens, but it doesn't seem like the best course of action at this point in the game. They seem determination all the same.
