The new luxury hotel in Mexico has recently started accepting reservations and will be a great place to stay if you're a fan of the HHonors program.

Basics of the Waldorf Astoria Cancun

Reservations are now being accepted for stays at the hotel as of November 1, 2020. The resort will be 15 minutes from the airport.

There will be 150 guest rooms and suites at the new hotel.

  • The Waldorf Astoria Cancun will offer ocean views from all rooms, and accommodations will be a minimum of 675 square feet, with each featuring a plunge pool
  • The Waldorf Astoria Cancun will have 21 spa treatment rooms (13 of which will be outside), a salon, a sauna and steam room, an ice fountain, a relaxing pool, and a gym
  • The Waldorf Astoria Cancun will feature a variety of dining outlets, including Malpeque (a fine dining restaurant), Chaya (an international and Mexican restaurant), Ja’o (a poolside restaurant with specialty cocktails), and Peacock Alley (the signature Waldorf Astoria bar)
  • The Waldorf Astoria Cancun will feature three outdoor pools, including a family pool, an adults-only pool, and a spa pool

Waldorf Astoria Cancun rates & points requirements

What is the price like at the hotel? Rates start at around $550-800 per night during the summer. The rate is in line with what I expected. The 29% tax & service charge in Mexico increases cash rates greatly.

I would highly recommend booking a paid stay through the Hilton Impresario program if you are going to be staying at the hotel. You'll get perks like complimentary breakfast, a $100 food & beverage credit, a room upgrade, and more. The hotel is currently offering a fourth night free promotion for stays through March 31,23.

When there is standard room availability, the hotel is usually retailing for 95,000 HiltonHonors points per night. The average cost for a five night stay is 76,000 points per night, but with a fifth night free on award redemptions, it would be less than that.

You can earn free night certificates at this property by using your co- branded credit cards. I think 95,000 points is the equivalent of $475 per night, including taxes and fees, if you get a fifth night free.

You don't have to pay taxes or service charges if you redeem points here.

Why do I feel lukewarm about this property?

I'm excited about the new hotel. It's a short flight from Florida to Mexico so it's a great place to redeem points and free nights. I enjoy visiting Mexico from the friendly people to the amazing food.

Los Cabos is one of my favorite Mexican beach destinations because of its amazing climate, topnotch hotels, and rugged desert landscape.

Even though it's more convenient to get to, I don't share the same love for the area. It may be that it is too similar to Florida for me, in terms of the climate and landscape, as well as the crocodiles and alligator.

Hotels in Los Cabos are of the same caliber as those in Mexico. Los Cabos has many more intimate properties than they do luxury factories.

The Andaz Mayakoba is not a place I want to return to often. If you want to just get away for a weekend, a nice resort can be a good place to go. Is it a good idea to go back to the hotel given the short flight, or is it better to stay in another place?

Again, that is just my opinion, and I know other people feel different about the area.

Bottom line

The new hotel will open in November of 2022. It seems like this is a great new option for people who like to travel and for people who like to stay in hotels.

I have a hard time getting excited about the area because it is so easy to get there, but this looks like a nice hotel.

Do you like the new hotel? Is anyone going to check it out?
