The starwatchers around the world have been impressed by the james wbb telescope. NASA scientists recently revealed that there was a time when they were worried the scope wouldn't make it.
NASA Mission Operations Manager Carl Starr admitted in a Science Channel special that a glitch in the telescope's sun shield caused it to fail to communicate with Mission Control.
There was a time when NASA didn't know if the JWST was going to be a space junk.
Starr said that they stopped because they didn't see the activated switches. We fired it again and it didn't work.
A number of switches are hit to signal that the shield is deployed. The ground team became worried when some of the switches failed to register.
What could have gone wrong was the topic of discussion at the control center.
Starr said that the situation was very serious. It got very quiet and people became very solemn.
Mission Control didn't get official confirmation of the sun shield unfurling. According to the telescope's thermal engineers, the temperature readings indicated that it was cooled down enough that it failed to hit a switch.
"When they told us that and we were getting the briefing, the looks on everyone's faces, the relief, and then we were able to go full speed ahead right after that," the mission operations manager said.
Thank you to our stars.
NASA engineers were freaked out by the telescope glitch.
A picture of Jupiter was just quietly released by the telescope.
