T-Mobile had the top download speeds on both its 5G and 4G/LTE networks, with median download speeds of 187.33Mbps and 116.54Mbps, respectively. It is nearly twice as fast as AT&T, which has a speed of 54.64 Mbps. The most consistent speeds of the bunch were delivered by the Un-carrier.

T-Mobile had the highest upload speeds, but they were only marginally better than AT&T, which had 9.14Mbps and 7.00Mbps.

T-Mobile's numbers aren't nearly as dramatic. The median 5G download speed for T-Mobile was almost the same as it was in the third quarter of the year, at 187.12 Mbps. T-Mobile's overall download speeds have increased from 90.65Mbps in January to 116.54Mbps in this most recent report.

The rapid expansion of T-Mobile's Ultra Capacity 5G network is believed to be the reason for the higher numbers. As more customers use the carrier's 5G network, median download speeds will improve.

The 5G side of the business is catching up on the C-band side of things. It had a median 5G speed of more than 100Mbps. Many of its customers still aren't covered by its 5G Ultra Wideband service and they're either stuck on 4G/LTE or using the carrier's low-band Nationwide 5G service

AT&T has a median 5G download speed of 71.54 Mbps, which is lower than the C-band. AT&T has only deployed the new C-band spectrum to a small number of cities. More AT&T customers are using the carrier's low- band 5G services. As AT&T takes advantage of a new chunk of C-band spectrum that it recently picked up, these numbers will likely improve.

The numbers by state

The U.S. Market Report breaks down the numbers by state, and there are still a few places where T-Mobile and AT&T are neck and neck.

T-Mobile was the fastest provider in 45 states, while AT&T was the fastest in two states. GCI is the dominant carrier in Alaska and beat T-Mobile to launch 5G there. Only one state, Delaware, was in the top 10 with a median download speed of 71.2Mbps. The states with the lowest internet speeds were Montana and West Virginia.

The states where other carriers came out on top had slower download speeds. South Dakota was the highest of all of them at 60.84Mbps on AT&T, but that is not saying much since it was in 33rd place.

The District of Columbia took first place with an average download speed of over 80Mbps. In nine of the top 10 states, T-Mobile came out on top, with median speeds ranging from 86.85Mbps in Massachusetts to 125.25Mbps in Illinois.

T-Mobile's median download speed was over 100Mbps in 17 states, including the state of Iowa, where it came in at 104.06Mbps.

The fastest smartphones

The other runners-up were the S22+ at 94.07Mbps and the Z Fold3 5G at 93.08Mbps.

It was no surprise that the S22 Ultra came out on top, as it was the only one with the X65 modem. The newer version of Apple's phone is using the older one. The fastest modem on the market was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with a speed of 100.85Mbps. The third place spot went to the Tensor, which powers the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro.

The most popular devices are not included in the report, so the numbers can be skewed by demographic and geographic distribution. People who buy a high-end flagship device like the S22 Ultra or the 13 Pro Max are more likely to care about the performance of their phones. Since the larger siblings use the same chipsets, this may account for the lower scores of the smaller ones.
