The head of the group was made a Hero of the Russian Federation for his alleged work in Luhansk.

The group is believed to be owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close friend of the Russian president. Prigozhin is wanted by the FBI for his alleged involvement in the troll farm that interfered in the election. Both the U.S. and EU have put Prigozhin on their sanctions lists for his activities. He has denied any link to the man.

Three weeks into Russia's brutal invasion, the Defense Ministry of Ukraine claimed that mercenaries from the Wagner mercenary group had taken up arms. The Defense Ministry shared an image of a dog tag on their Facebook page. The post said thatWagnerists are dying on the territory of Ukranian.

Britain's Ministry of Defense supported this claim. Despite repeated denials, the Russian state maintains extensive links with Russian military companies.

The Times reported in February that more than 400 mercenaries from the group had been deployed to kill the Ukrainian President. Zelensky has survived at least 12 assassination attempts, according to the Ukrainian government.

Dog tags said to belong to members of the Wagner Group as posted on the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Facebook page.

The war in Syria is said to have been fought by mercenaries who are known for their heinous acts. A lawsuit was filed against the group in March of 2021.

There is a video posted online that shows a man being questioned by men dressed in military uniforms. The man in the video was tortured and beheaded and his body was burned.

The U.N. experts said last year that he had committed abuses in the Central African Republic. Mass executions and torture were alleged to have taken place. Over 276,000 people had been forcibly displaced by December 2020.
