The government's slow response to the monkeypox outbreak has left many Americans frustrated and scrambling for scarce doses as experts warn that the government's sluggish response may not be enough to contain the growing outbreak.

In June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded its vaccine push to include men who have sex with men and people who have sex with men who have not been exposed to the disease.

The U.S. has ordered 7 million vaccine doses but most will not arrive for months and present stock is not close to meeting demand.

Booking appointments in areas such as New York City, Washington, D.C., and Miami-Dade County, Florida, and walk-in shots are all possible if you are at risk of getting a vaccine.

The issues have been magnified by technical problems and other obstacles associated with online booking systems, particularly in New York City, where the roll out was stymied by the booking system glitching, freezing and allowing some people access to appointments early.

There are concerns over who is receiving the shots and whether they are going to groups most at risk of monkeypox amid reports of walk-in clinics opening up in affluent areas of New York City and the technical savvy and time needed to navigate online booking systems.

1,814 is the total number of people that have died. The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in the U.S. as of July 15 is shown in the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The limit on monkeypox testing means this figure is likely much higher. New York, California, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, and Texas have the most confirmed cases.

Key Background

A number of cases of monkeypox were found in Europe and North America in May in people without a history of travel to the region, which has largely been ignored by the rest of the world. The virus can be spread through respiratory droplets when people cough or sneeze, but it does not spread easily between people. Men who identify as gay or bisexual and men who have sex with men are the majority of global cases. The close physical contact inevitable during sex can facilitate transmission of the disease, and experts have noted differences in the symptoms of the disease.

News Peg

The federal government's response to the monkeypox outbreak has been criticized by activists and politicians. The government has failed to learn from the Covid-19 Pandemic and needs a new office to deal with Pandemic threats. Gay men are going to be paying for this with their health if the vaccine supply chain isn't robust, according to the co- founder of a HIV advocacy group. The loss of crucial time early on in the outbreak may allow the disease to gain a foothold in the U.S.

What To Watch For

The first dose needs to be prepared. The only vaccine approved by the FDA for use against monkeypox is the Jynneos vaccine. It is supposed to be given in two separate batches. Officials are considering whether to delay the second dose in order to make sure as many people as possible get the first dose. Canada and the U.K. are currently using the strategy for monkeypox. New York City's health department said on Friday that it will use a similar strategy. The CDC and FDA don't endorse such a strategy. Jynneos supplies are being boosted by the U.S. An additional 131,000 vaccine doses will be made available for states to order on Monday, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. According to the HHS, it expects to have 7 million doses of Jynneos in the next two years.

Surprising Fact

More than one million doses of Jynneos vaccine have been purchased by the U.S. The FDA has been waiting to inspect the shots to allow them to be shipped out. The officials said they had finished the inspection.

Tangent

ACAM2000 is a vaccine that is plentiful in the government's stock. The vaccine that protects against monkeypox is similar to the vaccine that protects against smallpox. It's live-viruses design makes it unsuitable for people with HIV, as well as immunocompromised and pregnant people. Men who have sex with men who are at greater risk of HIV are the focus of a public health campaign.

Experts say the U.S. Monkeypox response has been woefully inadequate.
