On Saturday, 16th July, a Ukrainian cargo plane with eight people on board crashed in northern Greece due to engine problems. According to Serbia's Defence Minister Neboja Stefanovic, the An-12 was carrying Serbian-made ammunition to Bangladesh. The plane left Serbia at 18:24 and crashed in Greece at 19:24. The An-12 descended at a rate of 3000-4000 feet per minute. The witnesses said that the plane came down in a ball of flames and hit the ground. An emergency landing was requested by the pilot after he reported the failure of one of the engines. There were no survivors of the crash.
A witness told reporters that she was amazed that it didn't crash into their homes.
“It was full of smoke, it had a noise I can’t describe and it went over the mountain. It passed the mountain and turned and crashed into the fields. There were flames, we were scared.”

The locals in the surrounding villages were told not to leave their homes and not to wear masks because of the sensitive nature of the cargo. Firefighters and fire engines were sent to the crash site, but they couldn't get to it initially because of the explosions.
The plane was supposed to reach its final destination in Bangladesh with stops in Amman, Riyadh and Ahmedabad.
