Chris Sale left Boston's game against the New York Yankees on Sunday after he was hit in the hand by a ball.
The southpaw had a fractured fifth finger on his left hand.
Sale has been affected by injuries in the past. After having Tommy John surgery, the pitcher hasn't pitched in more than 30 games in two years.
In August, Sale went 6-1 with a 3.16 earned run, 1.34 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 9 starts. After suffering a rib cage injury during spring training, he only started in two years.
Sale is not the only one in Boston's rotation. Over the last few years, he has become one of the best pitchers on the team.
The Red Sox are fourth in the American League East with a 48-44 record. The playoffs will be difficult without Sale at the top of the rotation.
