Cam Smith: It was advantageous to play from behind (1:25)

After winning his first major title at the Open Championship, it was better to not be leading for much of the day. The time is 1:45.

2:42 PM ET

The city of St. is located in the northeastern part of the United States It has been a long time since Australia's CAMERON SMITH won a major victory. After waiting for his next one, Northern Ireland'sRory McIlroy will once again.

Smith stole the show at the 150th edition of The Open at St. Andrew on Sunday. Smith carded an 8-under 64 in the final round to win theclaret jug after starting the final round with a 4 shot deficit.

Smith is one of three players to shoot 64 or better in the final round of The Open. Greg Norman was the other one.

Young eagled the 18th hole to finish in second place. His third place finish at 18-under was disappointing. Since his last major, he has gone eight full seasons.

Smith had one of the best final rounds in major championship history, and he won the major. The crowd was behind the golfer.

Going into the back nine, he had a nice cushion. He couldn't match Smith's pars because he didn't give himself enough opportunities to make a run.

There were five observations from the last round.

Cameron Smith has arrived

Smith was one of the best players in the world without a win before Sunday. He is in the top six in the world. He has won on the PGA Tour six times.

Smith had a chance to take the 54-hole lead but his putter let him down. He said the golfing gods weren't with him.

Smith had a different story on Sunday. When he made the turn, he had cut the lead in half. Smith was in front by the 14th hole. He scored five times in a row starting at the tenth.

Smith made putts of 5 feet on No. 10, 16 feet on No. 11, 11 feet on No. 12 and 18 feet on No. 13 Smith nearly made an 87-foot eagle putt on the par-5 14th that would have given him the lead.

Smith is the only player in the last two decades to make the first five holes of the back nine in a major.

Smith almost drove the green on the 18th hole. He putted to 2 feet from 75 feet away, making his eighth and final touchdown of the day.

He became the first player to win a major after trailing in the final round.

The richest purse in PGA Tour history was won by Smith in March. He is the fifth player to win the Players and a major in the same year, joining Jack Nicklaus, Hal Sutton, Tiger Woods and Martin Kaymer.

McIlroy's disappointment

Since he won the last major at the PGA Championship, he has suffered a lot of disappointment. He had close calls at The Open and the U.S. Open. He has finished in the top five in nine of the last 10 majors.

The loss on Sunday, in which he had a four-shot lead at the start and a three-shot cushion at the turn, might be the worst.

"Obviously I'm disappointed." I didn't do much wrong but I didn't do well either. I played a controlled round of golf on that day. I did what I felt was necessary, apart from exploiting the easier holes. There were nine, twelve, fourteen. It would have been a different story if I'd made the shot there.

I lost to a better player this week. Twenty-under par for four rounds of golf is really, really impressive, especially to go out and shoot 64 today to get it done.

The majority of the galleries were behind the golfer. Smith might have felt like an underdog compared to him. On Sunday, theRory roars didn't come.

After making a par on the 10th, he moved to 18-under. He didn't score again the rest of the way.

On the 12th, he nearly sank a 61-footer and on the 13th, he missed a 14-footer. The par-5 14th was not used by the golfer. He putted from the fairway after his second shot was short. He had a disappointing par after another close miss. There were close misses from 28 feet and 22 feet.

I will rue a few missed putts that slid by. Overall, it has been a good week. This year's going and how this year's gone make me not be too sad. I'm playing some of the best golf of my life. It's just a matter of knocking on the door and eventually it will open.

In the majors, he finished in the top 10. He tied for fifth at the U.S. Open after tying for second at the Masters.

"Yeah, obviously, with not just his results this year, but he's come awfully close and played really well this year," said the man who finished in a tie for fourth. He's going to get one pretty soon because he keeps playing the way he's doing. It's difficult. You have to complete it.

Golf's next generation is good

Smith is the sixth player to win a major in his 20s. Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open, Thomas won the PGA Championship, and Scheffler won the Masters. The Open and the U.S. Open were won last year by two young men.

It would be seven in a row if you took out Phil's win at the 2021. The Masters was won by Hideki Matsuyama.

Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Arthur Havers and Bobby Jones all won six majors in a row in 1923, but players in their 20s haven't won six in a row in years.

Cameron Young is for real

For most of the week, you probably didn't notice that young was in contention. The golfer from New York shot under par in all three rounds. He had an eagle on the 18th to get second place.

Young is the second player after Morikawa to finish in the top three in his debut in those events. The 2020 PGA Championship and the 2021 Open were won by Morikawa.

It hurts more to come up one shot short. You don't care if you lose by 8. I did well on Sunday. I was going to sign up for 65 this morning. It was pretty amazing to see what he did.

Is St. Andrews too easy?

If the wind wasn't blowing hard off the North Sea, the best players in the world would be at risk.

The scores were very low because the wind didn't blow a lot. Smith's total of 20 under is the lowest for an Open. The average score was lower than 70. The number of eagles was 29 and the number of birdies was 962.

If I had to guess, I think we're hitting it too far. It might be too firm. I'm not quite sure.

The pins were tucked as well as possible, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

The way they made it difficult was hard for me to understand. If you're on the right side, you'll have 30 feet, 40 feet. There is no grass on some of the slopes if you try to hit it close.

It was very soft on Sunday. It was on the ground. There was no fighting. It almost felt like a USGA event in the past.
