Chris Sale left Sunday's game against the New York Yankees after he was hit by a comebacker.
The line drive hit the left hand of Sale. The ball went into the center field and New York was up by three.
Sale was replaced by Hirokazu Sawamura after he screamed out in pain.
Sale missed the first three months of the season because of a fractured rib, but he was back in the starting lineup. He gave up three runs on two hits while facing six batters and left the game after throwing only 24 pitches, but he had thrown 78 pitches.
Sale broke a rib while working out on his own during the Major League Lockout.
Sale, who is signed through 2024 on a five-year, $145 million contract, has thrown just 48 1/3innings in his last 11 starts.
In his return from Tommy John surgery, he went 6-1 with a 3.16 earned run in nine starts.
