The 150th Open Championship was won by an Australian by one stroke from a Northern Irishman.

Smith carded a bogey-free eight-under 64 in the final round to win on 20 under.

After taking a four-shot lead into the final round, McIlroy closed with a two-under 70 to finish third.

Even though he did not lose this, he did. Smith was the winner.

The world number six - and 2020 US Masters runner-up - started the final round four strokes behind the favourite and picked up two strokes in his first nine holes to gain a stroke on the other.

The overnight advantage was wiped out when Smith went on a birdie run.

While Smith was making a lot of noise, the other guy was playing a game of golf.
