A self-portrait of Van Gogh that has been hidden under layers of cardboard and glue for more than a century was discovered this week.
X-ray images of Van Gogh's 1885 "Head of a Peasant Woman" reveal a previous self-portrait on the reverse side, a trick Van Gogh used to save money on canvas and supplies. His left ear can be seen in the painting, which is notable since he cut it off.
The senior French art curator at the gallery said that "Moments like this are extremely rare." One of the most important and popular artists in the world has been discovered. A gift of this magnitude will be in the care of the National Galleries. The x-ray image of the self-portrait will be shown to the public.
Nobody is sure if the two can be separated from one another.
Art historians don't know what condition Van Gogh's self portrait is in, but they will try to remove the layers of material to reveal the work. There is currently research going on to see if the paintings can be separated.
There is hope that a new portrait of Van Gogh will be released soon. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has several examples of the thrifty portraiture method on display.
The art was sold as NFTs.
