It would be difficult to autograph the baseball cards that were sent to him. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies as an outfielder and was required to sign every card sent to him.
Signing thousands of cards over and over is mind numbing. He has a contract with four companies that requires him to sign certain cards and return them to them in a certain time frame.
After signing hundreds of cards, Montgomery decided to write a different name on one of them. He signed the card as "Borat" and sent a picture to his agent because he was a fan of the movie.
It seemed like a creative way to show your personality, so I was surprised that people don't do that.
He didn't think it would be a big deal, but he decided to post it on social media to see how people would react.
I was wondering when I'd have to clear that up. I'm just waiting for this one to get pulled....๐ญ๐ณ pic.twitter.com/edO8L2cLYa

He had become part of a conspiracy theory and that was the reason whyCollectors were interested.
Fans noticed two different versions of his autograph, which led to theories that his mom was signing a nicer version of his autograph for him.
Montgomery dispelled the rumors by showing through video that he has good handwriting and two signatures.

The one that was better was because they thought my mom was helping me sign. One guy told me that we had to stop letting mothers sign these cards. They didn't think I was faking it. I took a video of me signing two cards, one my regular way and one of my fancy way, and posted it on my website. I replicated each signature because they were my.
A whole new adventure for Montgomery was sparked by the video.
He didn't tell his mom about it. She's not on social media, so there's a chance she didn't know she was in the middle of a controversy.
Montgomery said she wouldn't be surprised if she didn't know. She might be flattered that someone thought my signature was hers, but I don't know.
Do you know what the Home Run Derby will look like? You can play for free and compete for a chance to win. An entry can be created.
After Signaturegate was solved, Montgomery decided to keep having fun and interacting with card collectors who were interested in the mini-saga.
"Everyone thought the signature video was funny and I was like, 'Oh, I have that Borat picture, so let's put that in this thread'." When I said I was waiting for one of them to find it, I didn't think it would go public.
There are only 150 of the numbered cards that have the signature on them. It was a one of one, though, as the other 149 would be signed with his actual signature.
He decided to keep going after seeing how many people liked the variation. He drew a mustache on his picture after signing a card as the Jets.

The signature was supposed to be written on the other card.

One of his followers asked him to sign a card with a version of his name that was readable in the blind.

Montgomery waited a month or two when he got a new shipment, and the one he received was more elaborate than his previous one. The one that got more views was the one that people were expecting.
When Montgomery and Lawlar decided to sign the other's name on their cards, it caused a lot of controversy. Both men signed their own cards as Lawlar.

It has potential issues with authenticity and can be difficult to verify. Signing another player's name was something that caught the attention of the company that makes the cards he was signing.
Montgomery said they weren't thrilled about it. They told me I couldn't do that after we did that. I'm not banned from doing it, but I'm chilling out from the fact that it was a conflict of interest.
Montgomery was given a set of cards by Onyx and was asked to do whatever he wanted with them. He doesn't know if the cards with alternate signatures will ever see the light of day, but he's hopeful they'll get put into circulation. He wants to continue showing his creative side and engage with fans while being unique with a mundane task.
It's possible to turn a card with 100 or 200 of them into a one of one. It reaches out to fans and gives me personality. The card is more valuable because people put bounties on it.
