It's hard to overstate the amount of money Amazon Prime has on The Rings of Power and the Lord of the Rings series. The debut of the series is less than two months away.
It has an uphill climb in front of it.
The new Rings of Power trailer has been viewed 6 million times, but the like/dislike ratio should concern Amazon. It has 56,000 likes and 159,000 dislikes.
John D. Payne and Patrick McKay are completely inexperienced in the field of television, and that's something that worries me the most. There is nothing to insult either of them. Both writers on Star Trek Beyond and a future flash Gordon project have very little in the way of resume credits.
The most expensive show in history and the most weight that has ever been put into anything Amazon has ever done for its streaming service must have been what they had in mind when they pitched them to the company. It isn't to say that a hit can't come from unexpected places The writer of Game ofThrones, David Benioff, had some stinkers like the script of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in his past, while the writer of the show,DB Weiss, had almost nothing in his name before the show. This seems like a very big risk for Amazon.
The production value here looks like a blockbuster movie and you can see that on the screen. The trailer just seems like a bunch of vague generalities, and I am not sure where this is supposed to be going, other than the descriptions I have read about the Lord of the Rings era in which this takes place.
Everyone is right to be skeptical of what has been shown so far. There is only one thing that will shut everyone up and that is a good show.
