It is hard to believe that Sony was a player in the handheld console race a decade ago. The console giant found success with thePSP in the 2000s and looked to push its advantage in 2012 with the PSVita. That didn't go according to plan.

Sony pulled first-party support early on in the lifespan of the PSVita, which was a failure. The handheld had a devoted fan base, but it was clear that Sony had lost faith in it.

Sony may never make a dedicated handheld gaming device again. The Steam Deck is like the successor to the Vita. Thanks to Sony, the PC platform is now supported by the company. With past select PS4 and upcoming PS5 titles coming to PC, Steam Deck promises console-quality gaming on the go.

Past ghosts

Killzone Mercenary was one of the blockbuster exclusives that was available on theVita. One of the main selling points for the handheld was the ability to play a game on the go with stunning graphics. Killzone Mercenary used a mission-based story structure to complement the system's pick-up and go nature.

Sony stopped making handheld experiences like that. Since then, it has been solely focused on its console games, but the PS4 has brought the handheld vision back to life.

The gorgeous graphics of Uncharted Golden Abyss

God of War is one of the games that has been released on Steam. This year will see the release of Spider-Man Remastered and the Legacy of Thieves Collection. Death Stranding and Detroit: Become Human are two games that are exclusive to the PS4. Thanks to the steam deck, all of those games are portable.

Sony no longer needs to provide its own proprietary technology to enable high-end console gaming on the go. Valve is handling that. Every day, the number of games that work perfectly with steam deck increases. More games will be added to the PC, as Returnal had previously leaked.

Cloud Save is the new cross-save

Cross-save was supported between the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game. It would be possible to play the game on your home console and then on your portable device. Your save data would be copied to the cloud and then you would be able to use it.

Notable titles like Hotline Miami did not support cross- save. The process wasn't easy to follow. Some cross-save supported games required you to manually sync them every single time. The issues left the cross-play promise underutilized, but Valve has realized that idea with the steam deck.

If you have an internet connection, your cloud saves will be automatically updated when you close out a game, so it's easy to transition from your PC to your steam deck. Cloud saves are supported by almost all games on steam. Not every game on Steam has cloud saveFunctionality, it completely snuffs out the Vita's selection of cross-save compatible titles.

Cross- save wasn't the most seamless function out there as the digital era was still developing. It was a brave attempt to make the system stand out from the crowd. The concept of cross-saving was once a defining feature of the Vita, but Steam's approach to cloud saving handles it better and feels like a natural step forward.

The Japanese game machine

Japanese developers were responsible for keeping the system alive after Sony stopped first-party support. There were some Japanese exclusive games on the handheld. Even though their online server was shut down late last year, they are still exclusive to the system.

The critically acclaimed Persona 4 Golden was an exclusive for eight years before it was released on the PC. Hatsune Miku was one of the Japanese franchises that was released on PC and Vita.

Persona 4 Golden was previously a Vita exclusive

The PC platform became more popular in Japan in the mid-2010s. Japanese developers still put out games for the system, including XSeed with the Legend of Heroes franchise and the Final Fantasy X and X-2 remake. The handheld was known for it's variety of games.

The PC versions of these games were released as well. Almost every Japanese game nowadays sees a PC release, which means that they can be played on steam deck. The steam deck feels like it is picking up where the Vita left off as a dream machine for Japanese games.

Streaming seals the deal

The ability to stream PS4 and PS3 games to the handheld via remote play was one of the cool features of the Vita. It was hundreds of miles away from my apartment where I played the game on my PS4 but I remember it. Sony has continued to work on this idea by making compatible devices.

The flexibility of Steam Deck makes it easy to duplicate the functions of the Vita. Players can now stream a catalog of games to their PS4 and PS5 consoles, as well as their PCs, thanks to the new New PS Plus service. The service can be streamed to the device from the steam deck.

Even games that don't have native PC releases can be played on the steam deck. First-party games like inFamous, Ghost of Tsushima, and Gravity Rush are included.

There is no walled garden on the steam deck. Along with being able to run new PS Plus games, the handheld can also install Xbox Game Pass, which is its direct competitor.

The cloud saves technology gives a smooth experience compared to the cross-save function. Elden Ring and halo Infinite can be played on steam deck

The universal support for PC gaming makes it possible for almost every game to be played on Steam Deck. This aspect has been used by Valve in a way that Sony was never able to realize with the Vita.

It wasn't necessary for Sony to follow up on the PSVita. To finish what it started, it needed a company like Valve.
