Democrats in Texas wrote a letter to the president asking him to protect out-of-state providers who prescribe medical abortions.
Legislators asked the president to declare a public health emergency so that these providers could give abortion-inducing medication without interruption.
Democrats wrote in the letter that most Texans don't want to travel hundreds of miles for an abortion.
Financial barriers will be faced by many who want to go out-of-state. Immigration checkpoint, abusive partners, or mental health concerns are some of the barriers that will be faced by some. To support these Texans who will not be able to access care out of state, we must make sure they can get FDA-approved abortion medication inside state lines.
Supporting abortion funds, establishing a federal program for providers to distribute medication used for abortions, and using the federal government's power over state laws that conflict with the FDA-approved regimen for medical abortions are some of the additional requests the legislators asked for.
The letter was addressed to the White House.
