The city of St. is located in the northeastern part of the United States For more than a decade, the golfer has been trying to win at St. Andrew. At The Open in 2010, he lost his way. The ankle injury he sustained playing soccer caused his mission to fail before it began. He could have been lost in the sand or derailed between a rock and a hard place. This attempt is going to plan.

One of the biggest rounds of his life is on the horizon.

Even though he is in a great place in his life, nothing will change. After finishing Saturday tied for the lead, what was his first worry? Someone is trying to find something to do on Sunday.

Ireland won the rugby series against New Zealand and he woke up early to watch it.

He was emotional when Ireland won. It was an accomplishment for them.

After taking a nap, he got to the course three hours before his tee time and did some gym work. He went out and shot a 6 under 66.

There's something about this year as he remains firmly in the mix at St. Andrew, in the 150th playing the sport's oldest major championship, at a time when those outside LIV Golf have looked to him as the sport's voice of reason

We've been here before with another person. He has had top-five finishes in eight of the last nine majors. He mentioned missed opportunities such as The Open and the Masters this week. Staying true to his processes is the key to changing that.

He said it made him play better. I got out of my process when I went back to Augusta. It was a hard lesson for me to learn after three days. It was difficult to take.

I only focused on the U.S. Open this week. I was trying to stay in my little cocoon for the entire week. I have been trying to do that as well.

He has kept his emotions in check, aside from the odd fist pump and chest-bump awkward-hug with his caddie. He allowed himself to look at the windows of the hotel where he was staying.

"I try to acknowledge as much as I can, but I'm just trying to stay in my process, stay in my own little bubble and I just have to do that for one more day," he stated.

Thecocoon protects process, patience and pragmatism.

He said he was trying to play with control. I'm trying to make sense of it all.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the man was the draw. He had what felt like the whole of St. Andrews with him wherever he went.

He wanted to "minimize the danger" after being 10 under through 36 holes. All was well after the 3 under 33. He reached the 10th. Bobby Jones is the name of the hole. He said if a player wanted true fulfillment they needed to win The Open here. He fell into the Old Course's trap after launching a 334-yard drive down the fairway.

When you're watching a player fly around the course, you don't want to make a mistake that could lead to a nose-dive. But a patient McIlroy twice backed off the shot as he walked through the claustrophobia of the course with two other players.

That was the box-office moment, but within this round were equally important shots, the sort that may not make a highlight reel, but are the building blocks for major charges. After his first round, he said he was trying to make the "fiddly" side of the sport his "forte", and he needed to produce all sorts of golfing contortion and nuance to keep this round moving in the right direction.

He saved par with a 10-foot putt at the 11th and received a fist pump. The worst place for his drive was on the 15th. He made a 49-foot putt that left him 5 feet for par.

He was able to avoid the notorious Road Hole Bunker on the 17th but found himself between a rock and a hard place as his second shot went over the wall to the right of the green. He was able to escape with a bogey, though it could have been a lot worse.

At the Canadian Open, where he won his second title of the year, he was the favorite to win theclaret jug. His title chances were one of the many narratives here. The two friends have become friends. The two played a game in Ireland. Woods is expected to play the full four days here. The 19th group walked up the 18th as he was waiting on the first hole in the 45th group. There was a group of people waiting behind the golfer. Thomas is one of Woods' friends. The old master was able to hold it together until he saw his two friends tilt their caps.

When two careers cross -- one passing the responsibility to drive the sport forward to the other -- that moment may become more significant over the next few years. The emotion of that moment overwhelmed him for a short time.

He was on the fairway when that happened. I was focused on my round.

The job was done.

It has been eight years since he last won a major. He's playing golf until he runs out of holes, rather than drawing on experience from where he's gone wrong before. There are positive things happening to the golfer. He's held the lead after 54 holes in six of the last seven majors. He won four of them. This is the first time in four years that he's led after 54 holes at a major, and he's also the first to win a major after 54 holes.

He said he wouldn't take anything for granted. I don't think I can go back in time.

I have done it before and it's the same. I have earned everything else in my career, so I have to go out there and earn it as well.

The last British winner of The Open was in 1990. Five years after Faldo's victory, Woods won here for the first time. A career-affirming chance is offered by this year's Championship.

It would give the golfer peace.

He didn't remove his cap while walking over the bridge. It was not a good time to celebrate. He doesn't have a single hand on the jug. Until he's there in the middle of the 18th, he won't be thinking of anything other than the next shot and staying in his shell.
