The Washington Nationals are willing to listen to trade offers for Juan Soto after he turned down their most recent long-term offer.
The largest contract in baseball history was offered to Soto, but he turned it down, according to sources.
Earlier this year, he said that he turned down a 13-year, $350 million offer before the season started. He can become a free agent after the 2020 season.
A change of plans for the Nationals would be represented by the decision to listen to potential trades for Soto, after the president of baseball operations and general manager said last month that the team wouldn't trade the star.
"We are not going to trade Juan Soto for someone else," he said on June 1. We told the player and his agent.
According to The Athletic, which first reported on the most recent rejected contract offer and the Nationals being open to listening to potential trades, some team officials no longer believe they will be able to reach a long term deal with Soto.
A return in a Soto trade would jump start the rebuild. They are sitting in last place in the National League East by 1412 games and are on the verge of a third straight losing season after winning the World Series.
The All-Star for the second year in a row is hitting a career-low.200 with 19 home runs and 42 runs scored in 89 games. He is going to participate in the Home Run Derby.
There is a trade deadline in Major League Baseball.
