A $10 quintillion asteroid is what I'm talking about.
The Psyche mission was supposed to launch this summer, but was delayed due to a number of issues. The venture was supposed to be an amazing opportunity to study a world vastly different from our own, and hopefully uncover some clues about the origin of our Universe.
According to an update from NASA, the mission is under review and could be scrapped.
The assessment will look at the project and institutional issues that have led to the uncrewed spacecraft's alleged software related delays.
Factors of workforce environment, culture, communication, schedule, and both technical and programmatic risks will be studied in the review. The results of the study will inform a continuation review.
Getting to Psyche is difficult. The three-year trek to the far-off asteroid was supposed to be spent relaying imagery back to Earth by the time it was done.
Money has already been spent on this project. It's probably fair to assume that the agency is feeling some pretty deep frustration as this potential cancellation comes on the heels of a flurry of other high-profile delays.
Something very bad might be going to go down at NASA.
