Extra charges applied by some airlines made travelling light seem attractive. There are more reasons to carry your holiday gear into a carry-on bag now that there are reports of long bag drop queue and lost luggage.

If you keep your hands on it at all times, you will have a better chance of getting to your destination with everything you need.

If you get it wrong, you can have a nasty shock at the airport if you have to check it in.

Buying a suitcase that can be put into the overhead lockers at the airport will help take the stress out of packing and avoid any unexpected surcharges at the airport.

The best cabin bags this summer

The top luggage retailers sell bags that fit in the overhead locker on a plane.

Eastpak bags were the best, followed by John Lewis, IT Luggage, Cabin Max, and Marks & Spencer.

The customers were asked to rate their purchases on a number of criteria.

The bag is 50 x 32 x 17 cm and can hold 35 liters.

It's one of the more expensive options, but it can be taken on most flights.

This bag can be used by passengers who have paid for priority boarding or easyJet carry on luggage.

It fits within the free carry-on luggage requirements of several airlines.

If you want to avoid paying extra for baggage on easyJet flights, the Cabin Max Anode 30 litres underseat cabin case is a good choice.

It is a small size at 45 x 36 x 20 cm, which is the same as the maximum dimensions allowed on board easyJet flights.

It's in line with the requirements set by Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic.

If you pay for priority you can take a free flight, but it's not big enough.

The cabin trolley backpack is 55 x 40 x 20 cm and has a weight of 1.7 kilogram.

If you paid extra with easyJet and Wizz Air, you would be able to carry on as much as you want.

It would not cost to take it on a flight.

The Porto cabin suitcase is 54 x 20 x 37 cm and has a capacity of 41 liters.

Priority customers of the three budget airlines would be able to use this bag on board and it complies with requirements.

There is a wide range of bags available from IT Luggage. The cheapest print case on the website is the World's Lightest. It's dimensions are 55 x 40 x 20 cm and it has 37 liters.

It is also suitable for all of the other airlines because of its dimensions.

The Resonating cabin bag has more packing space with 48 liters.

With dimensions of 54 x 36 x 25 cm, it would fit on all flights and weigh 3 kilogram.

The smallest case in the bunch is 16 x 34 x 27 cm and would fit on a flight for free.

The brand of the bag was highly rated by customers of Which?

It is small, with only a small amount of space for a change of clothes and a toothbrush.

If you pay for an upgrade on one of the airlines, you can take it as your smaller piece of hand luggage.

If you want to take a bigger bag on board, you will have to pay between £8 and £32 extra for priority, which will allow you to travel with a 10 kilogram wheelie suitcase.

Passengers can take a bag up to a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm, free of charge. It needs to fit under the seat in front of them to be effective.

Customers who want to bring a large cabin bag have to pay extra for an upfront or extra-legroom seat or book the add-on when they buy their ticket.

Travelers can bring a handbag or laptop bag with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 15 cm for free.

Passengers can bring a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm with a maximum weight of 23 kilogram for free.

Virgin Atlantic customers can take a 23 x 36 x 56 cm cabin bag for free if they book with the airline.

Jet2 passengers can take one piece of hand luggage on board for free if it is no larger than 50 x 45 x 25 cm and no more than 10 kilograms.

If the item is small enough to fit under the seat in front, they can bring it.

Wizz Air allows passengers to bring a 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag for free, but customers who upgrade to priority can take a 55 x 40 x 23 cm bag. It is not possible to add more than 5 cm to the size of the bag with wheels.
