I went to an Apple Store in 2012 to buy a Macbook for college with the money I made from my summer job. I set a budget of less than $1,000 and was on a quest to find a laptop for a journalism major. The store clerk said it was light. It's small. It's great for writing on the go. The man was correct. I was able to take four years of classes, internship and college paper thanks to it.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't envious when another student was carrying a laptop. I thought I needed to sacrifice some features in order to be portable, but I never did. I didn't feel the same ten years later. The new MacBook Air has a slick new design, a bigger and brighter display, MagSafe support, and a1080p camera.
The price will go up with these upgrades. You can still get the 2020 M1 MacBook Air for the same price as the base MacBook Air. The Air is still light, portable, and perfect for writing stories on the go, even though it has a nicer selection of ports and more raw power.
There is a breath of fresh air.
The signature wedge design on the MacBook Air is no longer used. The new model has the same design as the high end MacBook Pro models, which makes it look more sophisticated. It's less heavy. I'm not used to carrying a machine that light so I tend to lift it with too much force.
Unfortunately, you won't get the same upgrade as the other person. The new MacBook Air only has two ports and a MagSafe port for charging. There isn't an HD orSD card slot. I don't mind the lack of ports, but it would have been nicer if they had them.
You'll most appreciate the new display if you're from an older Air or MacBook Pro. It's sort of. I didn't have a problem reading the screen when I worked in my backyard because Apple has bumped the brightness a tad. The screen size went from 13.3 to 13.6 inches thanks to slimmer borders. I noticed the larger real estate and appreciated it. The M1 MacBook Air has a limitation on connecting to an external monitor. It's not good if you want to use a multiscreen setup.
The center top of the 14-inch MacBook Pro has a notch carved into it, but it doesn't bother me. When you have an app in full-screen mode you can hide it by using a dark background. I'm all for it if it's the notch that allowed Apple to upgrade the webcams. I have noticed that Apple adds a skin smoothing effect to my video calls.
