The Arizona industry is getting a lot of attention.
Virgin Galactic will build its next- generation Delta class space planes in Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix.
The company, which just last week announced a deal to build a new set of carrier planes for the Delta spaceships, said that the new facility could produce up to six spaceships a year and will bring hundreds of jobs to the area.
The facility, which is adjacent to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, is being built and should be ready in 2023. The lease terms were not disclosed in the statement.
The first fully crewed spaceflight with Richard Branson took place.
Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier said in the statement that the spaceship final assembly factory is key to speeding up the production of the Delta fleet.
Up to 400 suborbital missions per year can be launched using two new motherships and Delta space planes. The new planes are expected to begin service in 25 years. Delta-class space planes should be ready to start flying paying customers in the year 2026.
The first anniversary of Virgin Galactic's first fully crewed spaceflight took place a few days ago. The mission flew with founder Richard Branson on board Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity space plane which was hauled aloft by the carrier aircraft.
It hasn't flown a mission since then. The only operational spaceship and carrier plane in the fleet are Unity and Eve, which are being upgraded and maintained by the company.
The price of a ticket to fly with Virgin Galactic has gone up. The waiting list for Virgin Galactic is about 800 customers, and the company reopened ticket sales twice in the past year.
Virgin Galactic air- launches its customers. A space plane is carried under the wings of a carrier aircraft until it reaches an altitude of about 15,000 meters. After the space plane is free, it flies to suborbital space.
Virgin Galactic's next suborbital spaceflight was delayed by three months because of supply chain and labor constraints. It has not yet begun full commercial service, but it has reached suborbital space on four tests.
Blue Origin has flown five times to the last frontier with passengers on board. The first time was with Jeff Bezos and his family. On June 4th, Blue Origin's most recent flight took place. The company has not made its ticket prices public.
