Manchester United are on the verge of completing their third summer signing after agreeing a £45 million deal with Amsterdam for Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez.
The manager of United wanted to go back to work with the young man who he signed for.
After visiting Amsterdam last week, United chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough were able to get the deal done.
When Ten Hag decided to move captain Harry Maguire from his normal left-sided role to the right, he was planning for his arrival with his team selection against the Victory on Friday.
The remaining elements of the transfer, including getting a visa, will be wrapped up by the doctor who flew to Manchester for a checkup.
He will link up with his new team-mates when they return to England after the United tour of Australia, which is thought to be unlikely.
The United's recruiting staff has been busy recently.
They confirmed on Friday that Christian Eriksen had signed a three-year contract with the club.
At the beginning of the month, they signed a Dutch full-back.
