Three weeks after the Supreme Court's decision on abortion, the House of Representatives voted to advance two bills that would protect the rights of women.
The Women's Health Protection Act passed in a majority of votes. The bill would prohibit governmental restrictions on the provision of and access to abortion services.
The Ensuring Access to Abortion Act advanced in a vote. The bill was supported by both Republicans and Democrats. The Ensuring Access to Abortion Act protects the right of women to travel across state lines for abortions.
Access to abortion has been restricted in more than a dozen states as a result of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the law. Republican-controlled states have advanced laws that ban abortions even in cases of rape, incest, and medical emergencies.
The Senate will take up the two bills.
