The veteran defensive back announced on his social media accounts that he is retiring from the National Football League.

He played for five teams in a career that lasted from 2009 to 21.

The New England Pats won a Super Bowl at the end of the year, thanks to the play of their twin brother, McCourty.

After just seven games with the Dolphins, he was placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury.

He began his career as a sixth-round pick by the TennesseeTitans in 2009, and went on to spend eight seasons in Tennessee before a one-year stint in Cleveland and three seasons in New England.

During his career, McCourty started 141 of the 173 games he played and recorded 744 tackles, 18 intercepts,108 passes defended, nine forced turnovers, five fumbles and three touchdown.

He started three playoff games for the Pats and recorded 10 tackles and four pass break ups.

He played well enough to get to the Pro Bowl on a few occasions, including when he had 103 tackles and two picks in 2011.

Devin has spent his entire 12-year career in New England and has three Super Bowls to his name.

He will play for the Pats under a one-year, $9 million contract.
