In October of last year, a Saudi national, who was a columnist for the Washington Post, was murdered in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul. A declassified intelligence report released by the Biden administration last year implicated the prince in the killing of the journalist.

A report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence says that Saudi Arabia's crown prince approved an operation to kill or capture a Saudi journalist.

After the report was released, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on a number of Saudis, but did not impose economic sanctions.
