The director general of Russia's space agency has lost his job.
Rogozin made inflammatory statements that brought international criticism. According to an official release from the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Rogozin from his duties on Friday. The decree states that Putin will release the general director of the state space corporation from his post.
One minute after the second decree was published, it was announced that Yuri Borisov had been appointed director general of the corporation. Borisov has been Russia's deputy prime minister for the last year and a half.
Russia uses the space station for propaganda.
According to Meduza, the chief of staff for Putin may now be an administrator for Russian-occupied territories in eastern Ukraine.
International cooperation in space has been strained due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia's now-former space chief made multiple threats to pull Russia out of the International Space Station program earlier this year after Western nations imposed sanctions against Russia. The threats never came to fruition in the policy.
The space station was used to spread anti-Ukrainian propaganda last week. NASA administrator Bill Nelson tried to talk to Rogozin about the incident, but he said there was nothing to talk about. Aviation Explorer says that the sanctions should be lifted first.
The European Space Agency terminated its cooperation with Russia on the development of a life-hunting Mars rover mission, which was supposed to launch in September. The war in Ukraine has made it impossible for the two countries to work on the program.
It's not clear how Borisov's appointment will affect space cooperation.
