With full support for Apple HomeKit and the Home app, Meross's air purifiers can be used to improve air quality at an affordable price.

Meross has a wide range of HomeKit compatible smart home devices for regions around the world. Meross's smart home products are among the most affordable HomeKit compatible devices on the market and often set themselves apart with no need for a hub or third party app.

Setup and Connectivity

The easiest way to set up the air purifier is by twisting the hatch at the base to get the three-stage H13 HEPA filter, which comes in a bag. According to Meross, the pre-filter can capture 99% of particles at a small size. Thenermost layer of the filter uses activated carbon to remove odors. The Meross app helps keep an eye on the condition of the filter.

Users just need to connect the power cable once the filters are in. It's easy to get a longer or replacement cable if you need it, because the air purifier is powered by ausb-c port on its back.

Meross's smart home offerings don't require a hub or third-party app, which makes them different from other brands. If you open the Home app on your phone and tap Add accessory, you will be able to control and automate it from the Home app. This greatly streamlines the setup process compared to the clunky hubs and apps that other brands demand.

While this is the ideal situation for most smart home accessories, I have had issues setting up Meross's devices on my network, where they repeatedly failed to connect with the Home app. The 5 GHz portion of the network may need to be disabled temporarily for some users to be able to use it. Prospective customers should be prepared to fix their network in the event of any issues, as Meross's setup experience is generally good.

The smart air purifier worked well with automations and provided a reliable connection to the Home app once it waspaired. The Meross offerings are connected to my network and have no "no response" alert. The smart air purifier responds to Home app actions in less than a second.

The devices only work over the 2.4 GHz band. The Meross devices can be slow or refuse to connect to the network when the internet is unavailable, but cycling power seems to fix the problem.

Daily Use

The all-metal design of the smart air purifier makes it easy to open and close. A large fan inside pulls air in through the holes around the outside and blows it out the top of the house. Compared to other air purifiers, the design is slim and well-made.

The Home app can be used to control the four speed settings on the air purification device. When touched, the button emits a loud noise to confirm that it has been pressed. The button does a good job, but I would have liked a physical button.

If you step up to the third or fourth fan speed, it can get loud. It didn't bother me, but users who want to counteract allergies during the night might want to think about this. There are a lot of automation options thanks to HomeKit support, such as setting a scene or controlling another accessory.

It is important to note that Meross's smart air purifier doesn't have any air quality sensors, meaning that there is no built-in way to monitor when the purifier should be activated, what setting is required, and whether it is working to purify the air. An easy way to get around this is to use a HomeKit accessory that offers air quality monitoring and then set up automations in the Home app that can turn on the air purifiers when needed.

The lack of air quality monitoring is something to consider. If this is a must for you, you'll need to consider the added cost of buying another accessory that can offer this function and the need to set up automations.

The Bottom Line

At an affordable price, Meross's Smart Air Purifier works well. It's sleek design and quiet operation make it an option for most HomeKit setup.

An air quality sensor with a visual indicator, better physical controls, and quieter operation would have been appreciated, but at the device's price point it serves its purpose very well. Problems with my network can be easily overlooked once things are running smoothly. Meross's entry-level option is a good one if you're looking for more features in a smart air purifier.
