A Capitol Police officer who was injured in the January 6 riot said Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are the only Republicans who don't 'avoid' him in Congress

A Capitol Police officer who was so badly beaten during the January 6, 2021, insurrection that he decided to retire from law enforcement, said all but two Republican lawmakers "avoid" him and "pretended not to see" him in the halls of Congress.

The trauma from that day is still felt a year later, according to a retired sergeant.

For some people, that day came and went, and for me, to this day, I'm still dealing with those ramifications. It is difficult to adapt to your new normal.

The GOP lawmakers who protected Gonell from the mob of Trump supporters now ignore him.

Many of the people we protected on the day downplayed what happened. They pretend not to see me when I run into them. They either pretend to be doing something else or avoid me.

The two Republicans who have been most critical of former President Donald Trump and the only members of their party who serve on the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol attack have acknowledged him, according to Gonell.

The retired officer told MSNBC that he had been approached by both Cheney and Kinzinger.

Representatives for the two Republicans didn't reply immediately.

Gonell said that it was coming from all the people protected. It's disappointing. I'm not saying that I need that from them, but that shows a lot from the people who claim that they are pro-law and order.

The January 6 committee held their 7th public hearing. The panel's sixth hearing, which featured sensational testimony from a former White House aide, prompted Gonell to write a New York Times op-ed in which he said he felt betrayed by Trump.

"Although I experienced firsthand the brutal onslaught of the insurrectionists, I was shocked to hear Ms. Hutchinson explain the extent to which former President Donald Trump incited the people who almost killed me."

Hutchinson said that Trump was angry that his supporters weren't allowed at his rally and that he defended the rioters.

Gonell doesn't hold any bad feelings towards the Republican lawmakers who seem to forget him.

They don't want to talk to me. He said he would do his job the same way he did on January 6.
