My grandmother used to make a cake which she referred to as Granny cake.
The cake is a simple sponge cake with fruit.
I made it for the first time this week, and it was very easy to follow.
The Granny cake was one of the highlights of my childhood.
When I was a kid in Glasgow, Scotland, my granny's sponge cake was one of the highlights. Whenever my sister and I came to visit she made it for us.
I assumed she named it "Granny cake" because she did it herself.
My granny told me that Esther Brown, her husband's grandmother, gave the recipe to her in 1965, when she was a young woman.
Esther used the recipe as a cake to fill up the "wains", which is a Scottish word for children. It was named Granny cake after Esther.
I made the cake myself for the first time this week after getting the recipe from my granny.
My granny gave me her recipe and method over the phone and I decided to use it.
The ingredients list is here.
Two cups of flour.
A small amount of sugar.
1 ounce of butter.
There are two eggs in this picture.
A quarter of a cup of milk.
There is a small amount of salt.
A quarter of a cup of sultanas.
Rub the flour and butter together after the oven preheats.
If it's a fan oven, my granny suggests pre- heating the oven to 355 degrees Fahrenheit. The first thing you need to do is rub the self-raising flour with the butter.
Eggs and some of the milk can be added after mixing the ingredients.
If you don't need all the milk, it's best to add half of it. She said it's a good idea to add it in slowly and mix well in order to avoid a batter that's too runny.
The mixture looked similar before I put it in the oven.
I found that granny was right about the milk. I used most of it, but there was a small amount left over.
I put the cake in the oven after I greasing the cake pan.
Granny said to bake the cake until it is golden brown. She said a good rule of thumb is to place a skewer or fork in the center of the cake, and if it comes out dry, the cake is ready.
After 45 minutes, the cake was ready.
The cake looked golden brown and fully baked after I checked the oven. I put a fork in the center to make sure it came out dry.
The cake should be served with pudding.
I didn't know how easy it was to make granny cake. The recipe is both delicious and easy to make.
If you don't have custard, Granny said you can serve the cake with anything, including ice cream, ice cream cones, or ice cream sticks. As a child, I used to like to eat cake and custard.
As an adult, I was able to try the cake again, and I will definitely be passing the recipe down to future generations.
