Tiger Woods laments first-round struggles at Open Championship (1:01)

There is a time and a place for this.

4:11 PM ET

The city of St. is located in the northeastern part of the United States Tiger Woods had a double-bogey on the first hole of his opening round at the 150th Open Championship after hitting a perfect tee shot in the middle of the fairway.

It didn't get much better after that. Woods had a 6-over 78 by the time it was over. He was 14 shots off the lead.

It was a disappointing start for Woods, who has only played in three official tournaments this season. Woods' second shot caught a strong gusts of wind after he found his opening tee shot. In front of the green, his ball burned in a burn. After a drop, Woods made a nice chip shot to about 3 feet, but missed the short putt and made a double- bogey 6.

The highest score I could have shot was probably the one Woods mentioned. I did not start well. Sometimes it goes that way. It doesn't seem to come back no matter how hard you try.

The Old Course's greens were slower than its fairways, which compounded Woods' bad luck, he said. He was at 4-over after four holes after making a three-putt on the fourth.

Woods said he had at least four or five three-putts. It wasn't very good on the greens and I missed a lot of putts. I couldn't hit the putts hard. They looked quicker than what they were putting.

Woods was tied for 146th after the first round of The Open. The only other time Woods was in worse position after the first 18 holes in a major was the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, when he shot 10-over 80.

Woods said it felt like he didn't hit it that badly. I didn't have good speed on the greens. I ended up in bad spots, but I didn't think I hit it that bad. There were some weird things that happened. This golf course is similar to the links. I had the chance to turn it around and get it rolling the right way but I didn't.

The bad news for Woods is that Thursday's walk on the Old Course was more difficult than it was during the opening rounds of the Masters in April and the PGA Championship in May. Since he was seriously injured in a car wreck outside Los Angeles more than a year ago, his repaired right leg is stronger.

He will have less than 13 hours to recover and prepare for the second round. At 4:58 a.m., he is scheduled to tee off. On Friday, Matt Fitzpatrick and Max Homa will be with us.

Homa called Thursday the "coolest fricking day I've ever had on a golf course" after he shot a 1-over 73.

Homa said that he is the GOAT for a reason. He was very pleasant. The day was enjoyable. The day was a dream come true without the golf. It felt like something out of a movie.

Woods said he would have to shoot a 66 to stay in the tournament. There were only two players who did that on Thursday.

Woods said that it had been done. My responsibility is to go ahead and do it, because the guys did it Thursday. It's necessary to do it.

On the short par-4 ninth, Woods began to turn his fortunes around after a terrible start. He drove his tee shot through the green and made a putt for par. Woods smiled and licked his finger as he walked off the green.

On the 10th hole, Woods made a layup. His approach shot was his best of the round after he knocked his tee shot down the middle of the fairway. The putt improved to 4-over. Woods missed a nine-foot par putt on the 11th hole. He bogeyed the 13th after three-putting.

The par-5, 616-yard 14th is one of Woods' best holes. He ripped a 412-yard drive in the middle of the game and hit the green. He two-putted from a good distance.

Woods said he was happy to be back at the Open. It may be the last time he plays in one at St. Andrew.

Woods said it was very significant. I was hoping to play this year. I looked at it at the beginning of the year, end of last year, trying to see if I could do it, but I was able to play two of the major championship in between then and now, which was great.

This was on the calendar to make sure I was well enough to play it. It didn't do a very good job.
