The United States is historically divided. Key institutions' trust in them has gone down. Many people don't think President Joe Biden won the election. Donald Trump and his Republican allies are pushing false claims on 2020 as they attempt to whitewash the deadly riot at the Capitol in January of 2021.

In a conversation with Insider on Wednesday, Hill said that the state of US democracy was a mess.

The distrust in the electoral process fomented by Trump and those close to him has created a recipe for communal violence according to Hill, who served as the top Russia advisor on the National Security Council. She said that the US could end up in a civil conflict.

Some people think that may have been the last fair election. A portion of the population will always believe that whoever was elected is illegitimate.

The US has reached a point where people don't trust each other and start fighting.

The 21st century version of civil war has been argued that the US is already experiencing a slow- moving civil war. Hill said "I've said that myself at times and I've dialed it back a bit." There's a lot of violence between people. We are already part of that. Many of the things that have happened here have made us ungovernable.

"I don't think we would see the kind of conflict that we had between the states back in the day," Hill said. People's sense of the civil and civic ways of resolving disputes are out of date.

It's a sign that your country is in when people are storming the US Capitol, staging armed protests at state capitols, and engaging in targeted, mass violence.

"However you define it, you're in big trouble because everyone is on edge and feeling that they need to resolve the disputes themselves," she said.

The GOP is 'hellbent on undermining democracy'

Hill is worried that the US could be moving towards autocracy. She saw how Trump tried to follow in the footsteps of authoritarian leaders.

In her memoir, "There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century," Hill wrote that Trump may have paved the way for another president who was skilled in project management.

Hill warned that it could happen in the US if the Russian president were to extend his term in office.

"I'm very concerned about it, I'm worried that someone could pull a Putin in the US and move it towards autocracy," Hill told Insider.

The January 6th committee has tried very hard to refute the false notion that the election was stolen from Trump, Hill said.

She said that some of the people who will run for the GOP nomination in 2024, including those who could potentially beat Trump if he makes another bid for the White House, have never denied what he's said.

If Trump runs and wins again on that basis, it would be a disaster, and if another Republican wins, it would be even worse.

The GOP is no longer the Republican party of old, according to Hill.

Hill said that people in the UK have described the Republican party to her as a "satanic death cult."

The Democratic party is not trying to undermine the democratic system.

She said that the Republican party is hellbent on trying to undermine democracy to exert minority rule.

Hill, who was a key witness during the House impeachment inquiry into Trump's dealings with Ukraine, said she's been following the hearings. The committee has made a strong case so far.

Hill said that it doesn't mean that everyone else is watching and persuading.

Everybody needs to work to strengthen America's democracy.

Hill said that everyone has to think about what they can do in this moment and what kind of country they would like to live in.
