The four-time All-Pro offensive tackle announced his retirement from the league on Thursday.

Schwartz was released by the Kansas City Chiefs in March of last year. He had a back injury that ended his season in 2020 and ended his streak of 134 consecutive starts.

Schwartz stated in his statement that he has been doing rehabilitation ever since the surgery.

It's clear that my body won't ever be the same, even though I'm currently feeling as good as I have since then. He said in the statement that the nerve pain down his legs is still a daily occurrence.

Schwartz was selected in the second round of the 2012 draft by the Cleveland Indians. He was selected to the first team in each of the last two seasons and was an All-Pro in each of the last three seasons.

He started his career with 7,894 offensive snaps before being knocked out of a game in the middle of the season. He played in all three of the Chiefs' playoff games, including their 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, to earn his first championship ring.

He said that winning the Super Bowl was his greatest achievement. I have forged relationships that will last a lifetime. Football was a huge part of my life. I love the game and share my knowledge with others. I didn't define myself as a football player.

The offensive lineman has built a large following for his cooking demonstrations as well as his critique of the football team. The videos "Mitch in the Kitch'' are posted on a number of websites.

Schwartz said he enjoyed his time in the league and walked away feeling fulfilled. I have other interests that I will have more time to explore. I will have more time with my wife and dogs.

He thanked the city of Kansas City and the fans of the football team.

I would like to thank the Kansas City fans. Being a Chief is more than wearing a uniform. "Representing you on and off the field has been a privilege." The bond I've formed with this city and the people here is a big reason why Brooke and I are staying here for a long time.

The parade gave a good indication of the magnitude of the kingdom. It was amazing to see how many people cheered us on at Sea of Red, knowing there were many more that could not attend. It's difficult to describe the city's support until you've experienced it yourself. There is nowhere else I would rather be.
