It’s not witness protection, but it’s pretty close to anonymity

It isn't hard to find a tough place to live in Canada if you're from the east coast. You have to listen to the Tragically Hip all the time in a different country because it is far away from the people you love. Johnny Gaudreau, perhaps with the only chance he'll ever have of choosing where he'd like to play, something not afforded to most players, decided that living in a shit-kicker town in an overall backward territory was not the place to call home.

Columbus is a town surrounded by an overall backward territory. I know what your state government has done. Gaudreau is a shit-kicker and it's ok.

The biggest story in hockey free agency last night was the news that Johnny Gaudreau wouldn't be coming back to the Flames due to family issues. It was assumed that the main concern would be his family, and that he would choose to live in New Jersey or somewhere else. Columbus can't be much more than an hour flight from his Philly-area home, but that doesn't mean it's hockey irrelevance. The seven-year deal is similar to the one Gaudreau signed.

The Jackets aren't bad. If they were really bad, they could have drafted a player that people would care about or identify with. It isn't that they're good Hockey purgatory has been their entire existence. They've never made it to the second round. Only the Jackets could pull off the biggest upset in NHL playoff history, sweeping the record-setting Lightning in the playoffs, and only months later have most hockey fans saying, "Who was that team that beat theLightning again?"

The Jackets missed out on the playoffs last year, so they think adding Gaudreau vaults them into a better spot. Which team is going to get worse in the playoffs? Maybe the Bruins. I think there is some honor in only missing the playoffs.

Everyone who has ever been to Columbus has described it as "or whatever." The insurance company lords over the downtown.

Is it possible that Gaudreau makes it more than that? It's hard to see. He can feed the player 25 goals or more, and then get upset that the player is standing at the other circle waiting for another chance to score. The hockey equivalent of a saltine is the fact that the Jackets will be over the cap to build this roster. They will have to part ways with Gustav and Oliver because they were in Columbus. It's the same thing.

If Cole Sillinger wasn't the son of a former NHLer, he wouldn't have been drafted in the 3rd round. Jack could be his center. Six years ago, he was thought of a lot. He might be able to surprise people with a save-percentage season of......................

The Jackets will not be a lottery team. They won't be able to add another top star because of his contract. No one will remember that in 24 years. It's possible that is what he wanted. Playing shows in Missouri pays well and that is what Gaudreau has agreed to do.

Other news in NHL free agency

Hockey media decided to give the title to Detroit because they were tired of giving it to Dallas. They missed the part where the second-worst defensive team in the league last year signed Ben Chiarot to make it better, which is like trying to plug a leak in your kitchen sink. The wolverine takes better angles than the chariot. Everyone agrees that the Detroit rebuild is going swimmingly. In 2029, maybe they will be good.

I have something nice to say, as the Rangers improved their second-line center position with the addition ofVincent Trocheck. It won't stop Adam Fox from being a good person, but it will make him better.

The Golden Knights had to part ways with Max Pacioretty in order to fit under the cap, and he was the second player that the Knights had to give up just to fit under the cap. Jack Eichel deals keep giving players to other teams. There's a song called "KAROOOOOGA!"

It's definitely an organizational plan to think William Karlsson will shoot 25 percent again and Robin Lehner won't slip in the crease on whatever part of his brain dripped out of his ear that day. In the desert, it is going well. Four years remain on that contract.
