Raheem Sterling will be huge asset for Chelsea - Thomas Tuchel

As they try to close the gap on Manchester City andLiverpool, head coach Thomas Tuchel says that he can help.

He hopes he shapes the team by being who he is.

He's going to be a big asset for us.

He is a huge player, with a huge influence in the last years in English football, and he's in a perfect age to now take responsibility around young players that we have and be an example.

His hunger for responsibility, his style of play, and his intensity are all outstanding.

The benchmark in the league is what we need.

  • Why has Sterling left Manchester City?

The signing of Manchester City centre-back Nathan Ake is close to being completed, as well as a four-year deal for a defender from Naples.

The manager wants to strengthen the defensive side of the business after losing two players.

He said the club had to work smart and fast to keep up with their rivals, with ownership issues holding up their ability to make transfers.

The new ownership, led by United States co-owner Todd Boehly, took over the club in May of this year.

Tuchel says he has a close relationship with Boehly, who has taken on the role of interim sporting director after the departure of recruitment and transfer specialists.

"The relationship with the owners is very close, which is a big change in the daily structure and communication," Tuchel said from Los Angeles as the team prepared for their pre-season tour.

I am more involved. I need to be more responsible. When the pre-season ends, I'll want to be more on the coaching side of things.

We want to compete for a minimum of top four so we need to improve our team. We need to be smart, we need to be fast, and we need to find solutions because we act on the transfer market for a long time. My job is to assist.

City won the title by 19 points over second-placeLiverpool. Tuchel said that he was a very impatient person and that it would take a long time. I don't want to talk about the future. This is not me, this is not something I do.

We need to be ready for the first game, but we will try to close the gap in the second game. If we don't have a strong squad, we won't be able to compete for what we are used to. I don't want to give in and I don't want to lose this attitude. We need to do our homework.

The first transaction under the new ownership was to loan club record signing Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan.

Tuchel said that the player wanted to return to Italy and that's why he decided to leave. He admitted that he was responsible for signing the forward along with Cech and Granaia.

"When we had the agent and Romelu's point of view, we thought it was best to take the decision that we took and Todd had my full support," said Tuchel.

Tuchel said that he would like to build a legacy similar to that of Manchester City's managers.

The new owners want managerial stability, a change from the previous owners who had 10 permanent managers in 19 years.

"Yes, I would like to be a legacy manager, but I have to earn it," he said when asked if he wanted to be a manager.

They did not get it offered to them. You have to earn it and I have to earn my time here at the club so I am trying to be the best version of myself that I can be.

The owners will feel it and we will leave here. We talked about my future in the club, but it's not the priority right now. The most important thing is to have the best team. The team is the only thing that can win a coach a game.

The legacy can be created if you deliver. I don't think it will be given to me for nothing.
