The director of artificial intelligence and the leader of the Autopilot vision team is leaving the company.
There was a lot of speculation as to whether Karpathy would come back after a four-month leave of absence.
Karparthy wrote that it was a pleasure to help the company towards its goals over the last five years. In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I'm looking forward to seeing the strong team continue that.
It’s been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways. In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I look forward to seeing the exceptionally strong Autopilot team continue that momentum.

Karpathy said he had no concrete plans for what he might do next, adding that he looks to spend more time thinking about his long-term passion for technical work in artificial intelligence, open source and education.
According to sources, Karpathy is considering some venture investments.
In a California regulatory filing, the company said it was laying off 229 employees who were part of the company's larger Autopilot team.
Karpathy was a researcher at Openai, which was backed by Musk. One of the most respected, deep learning courses was created by him and he has an extensive background in artificial intelligence.
The computer vision system built to support the autopilot advanced driver assistance system was the focus of his role at the company. Karpathy wanted to create a system in which a neural network could identify multiple items within an image, label them using natural language and report to a user. The system that works in reverse was developed. The model could use the descriptions in natural language to find the object in the picture.
