A direct challenge to the best-selling battery-electric sedan on the market was issued by the new Ioniq 6, which was unveiled byHyundai.
The Ioniq 6 is the follow-up to the Ioniq 5 SUV and the second model in the Ioniq EV sub- brand. The Model 3 Long Range has a test cycle of over 600 kilometers.
The benchmark for EV range has been set byTesla.
Ed Kim, president and chief analyst for AutoPacific, said that many competing EV have been edging closer to the range ratings ofTesla.
The goal of the Korean company is to become a top-three EV provider in the U.S. by the year 2026.
The Model 3 is the second best selling electric vehicle in the U.S. The Ioniq 5 is a battery-electric SUV.
Even though sedans have been a weak spot for auto sales over the past several years, it seems strange thatHyundai chose them. The Ioniq 6 and Polestar 2 are battery-electric cars that aim to dethrone the Model 3.
Kim said that sedans are a more affordable way to get into electric vehicles. It could be a real value proposition for EV shoppers if the price of the new car is the same as the IONIQ 5.
Like the Ioniq 5, the new all-electric sedan will be built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), an 800-volt electrical architecture that enables faster charging than comparable electric vehicles.
As it strives to go from a maker of affordable, entry-level cars to a top global EV brand, it has invested aggressively in the expansion of the Ioniq portfolio. More than $10 billion will be spent in the US by the year 2025.
The new EV plant and battery manufacturing facility in Georgia will be funded by more than half of the investment. South Korea will build the Ioniq 6.
The Ioniq 5, which won the World Car Awards this spring, shows thatHyundai is willing to take risks. The dome-shaped Ioniq 6, which has a low hood and high roof, is similar to the theme of that center. The dimensions allow for a high ceilinged cabin where people can relax or work.
A lighting system that has 64 colors helps create a space that restores mental energy.
Ioniq 6 will be available in the U.S. in early 2019. The price hasn't been made public.
