Guillermo and Nandor look at a painting of Nandor's many, many past wives.

What We Do in the Shadows has already been renewed for seasons five and six, so there is no need to review it. We need these vampire hijinks more than ever in these dark times.

The main characters, who were scattered across the globe in the season three finale, will return to Staten Island in the first episode. The boy is not Colin Robinson, Laszlo insists repeatedly, though it is easy to make that mistake since What We Do in the Shadows has achieved a new level of creepsiness. You have to admire the writers for carrying the biggest plot twist of the season in a new direction.

The decrepit state of the vampire mansion and the toddlings of Baby Colin provide a lot. The small asides and visual gags bring the comedy more to life than the intense horniness of Laszlo and Nadja. The best comedy gold comes from the human familiar who never misses a chance to silently telegraph his true feelings to the unseen documentary crew.

What will be two of season four's big storylines in motion are the quest for a bride and the opening of a vampire club. While the latter gives us reason to revisit the local Vampiric Council headquarters, the former gives us a reason to mend our strained friendship. The second episode, "The Lamp," pushes both of those plots forward in ways that suggest season four will be more serialized than earlier seasons, with an expanded role for the Guide as she grapples with her home and workplace. The results are next-level, if a bit heavy on big perms and novelty hats, due to the nightclub subplot and the fact that it gives What We Do in the Shadows an excuse to change up both Nadja and the Guide's fashions.

Nandor accidentally summons a new character, a djinn, who he quickly decides to use once he learns what he wants. He wants to bring back all of his wives to life and vet them to find the one he wants to re-marry. That is the battle cry of what we do in the shadows as a whole. No matter what they do, there will be chaos. That is a big part of the joy of the show, and you just know that no matter what we see in the first two episodes, season four is going to be even funnier and more absurd.

New episodes of What We Do in the Shadows can be seen on Tuesdays on FX.
