I reported yesterday that the company might be folding. The company said that the truth may be a bit more nuanced.

There was a media article regarding Nikon’s withdrawal of SLR development. This media article is only speculation and Nikon has made no announcement in this regards. Nikon is continuing the production, sales and service of digital SLR. Nikon appreciate your continuous support.

There is something odd going on here.

When a company refutes a media article, they usually highlight that they have more SLRs in the works, or that they are continuing to invest in development, to assure potential customers. More questions are being raised than it answers. The company says it's still producing and selling. I reported yesterday that they are going to sell and service the existing cameras, and that doesn't seem to have changed. There is no assurance for fans that the future of the DSLR cameras is secure.

According to my sources at the company, there is a lot of internal turmoil going on at the company and that they are not quitting the business. The company has stated multiple times that it is focusing its attention on mirrorless cameras. It is possible that the company is taking a slower approach to its model update cycle.

I reached out to the company to find out more about its product portfolio and investment in the camera models.
