The Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday that a man was arrested and charged with raping a 10-year-old girl.

The girl's bond has been set at $2 million after the man confessed to raping her.

The Indianapolis Star reported that the 10-year-old was denied an abortion in Ohio due to the state's six-week abortion ban, and then had an abortion in Indiana using medication.

The girl was six weeks and three days pregnant when she sought an abortion in Ohio, and her case was first made public by a doctor in Indiana who was asked if she could take the patient.

According to the Dispatch, police were first made aware of the case on June 22 when the child services agency referred it to them.

It was ten years ago. A pregnant woman was raped. It's already been traumatic. I was forced to travel somewhere else. President Joe Biden said that he imagined being a little girl. The girl being forced to give birth to a rapist's child is extreme.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, the man who asked a federal court to put the state's abortion ban back in effect, had doubts about the 10-year-old's case. On Fox News, the AG said there was no evidence to suggest the account was true and that it was likely a fabrication. Yost told the Dispatch that they were happy when a child rapist was taken off the street.

Key Background

State abortion bans have taken effect after the Supreme Court legalized abortion without an exemption. Most of the state bans make performing abortions a felony and do not allow exemptions for rape or incest, though they usually allow abortions for medical emergencies. A Morning Consult/Politico poll shows that most Americans oppose abortion bans that only allow exceptions if the life of the pregnant person is at risk. The majority of respondents oppose bans that exempt rape and incest.
