Steve Bannon asked a federal judge to delay his upcoming trial on criminal contempt charges, this time citing repeated references to some of his past comments during a hearing Tuesday of the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot
CNN will air a one-hour documentary on Steve Bannon on Sunday, the day before his trial for contempt of Congress is set to begin, according to a court filing.
The risk of prejudice against Bannon among the jurors who will be selected for his trial on charges of willfully refusing to comply with subpoenas is very serious, according to defense attorneys.
The lawyers wrote to the judge that there was nothing magic about the trial starting on July 18.
They requested that the trial be delayed until after October 15.
After his lawyers argued that media coverage of the House hearings would hurt his right to a fair trial, Nichols rejected a previous bid by Bannon to delay his contempt trial.
On the same day, Nichols said that Bannon couldn't argue at trial that he failed to comply with the subpoena on the grounds of executive privilege, and that he wouldn't be allowed to call Pelosi and members of the panel as witnesses.
One of his lawyers complained in court, "What's the point in going to trial here if there are no defenses?" because of the judge's rulings.
If he is found guilty of the two contempt charges, he will face at least 30 days in jail.
Lawmakers at Tuesday's House committee hearing showed video excerpts of him speaking on his podcasts that had been edited for maximum inflammatory effect.
On that video, he said, "All hell is going to break loose tomorrow" The point of attack is what we're on now. Yes, right? Tomorrow's point of attack. It will not happen like you think it will. Is it okay? It won't be the same. All I can tell you is strap in.
On the same night, a committee member said, the president and his chief strategist spoke on the phone.
The certification of President Joe Biden's Electoral College victory was delayed after thousands of Trump supporters rioted outside and inside the Capitol.
The CNN special report titled "Divided We Fall" will be aired on Sunday.
According to the filing, the Special Report on Mr. Bannon is being widely promoted with a trailer and special announcements by CNN hosts.
The filing notes that the trailer for the special shows Bannon saying that they would govern for 100 years.
CNN investigates the man and his master plan in rare interviews, and a video clip shows former Trump camp manager Brad Parscale saying, "Bannon's calling the plays."
The term "master plan" was used to describe Mr. Bannon's purported machinations.
A description of a book titled, "Hitler's Masterplan, 1933-1945" was appended to the end of that sentence.
A prospective juror will be prejudiced by the Special Report documentary, which will be broadcasted the day after the trial.
