According to the report, Pichai told employees in an email that they needed to be more entrepreneurial.

CNBC and the Wall Street Journal reported on the leak. The email was confirmed to be authentic by the search engine company.

"We need to be more entrepreneurial working with greater urgency, sharper focus, and more hunger than we've shown on sunnier days," Pichai wrote to staff, according to a report.

The company will be slowing the pace of hiring for the rest of the year in order to focus on engineering, technical and other critical roles for the next two years.

According to the company's latest earnings report, from the end of March 2021. to the end of March 2022, the company hired over 23,000 people.

Its shares are down 22 percent so far this year. CNBC reported that Pichai wrote that they hired 10,000 people in the second quarter.

The broader economic environment has made it more difficult for entrepreneurs to start their own businesses.

"Scarcity breeds clarity, which is something we have been saying since the earliest days of the company," Pichai was reported to have said.
