I told you that I could stop a train with no brakes.
The same four-year, $24.4 million contract that seemed to be the endgame from jump street, and one that Malkin had apparently decided wasn't going to be enough to keep him around, was agreed to by the Pens and their star player. It was, as both the Pens and Malkin had that moment in a rom-com where they looked at each other from down the street, while it was almost certainly raining. They ran towards each other at the end of the song.
The NHL free agency kicked off at noon Eastern, as Johnny Gaudreau was immediately replaced at the top of the market by another player. Johnny Hockey won't be coming back to the Flames, as he wants to leave for a family reason. TheFlyers aren't in much of a position to be fishing in big fish like Gaudreau, but he is from the Philly-half of Jersey and it would be veryFlyers to try and cram him in on a team that's not going to be anywhere near contention The Devils are a hot rumor as they are on the rise and have a center who could play with Jack Hughes. There will be a lot of interest as this is a 100 point wide receiver.
The Flames don't have a lot of time for a Plan B because they only learned of Johnny Gaudreau's intentions on the eve of free agency. They had allocated money for Gaudreau, could they try to get Ondrej Palat to follow suit? Do they try to sign two or three players with the money they have set aside?
If Matthew Tkachuck tries to force his way out of town, is this the end of the Flames? Do the Flames have to take a step back and figure out what's next if they conclude they can't keep Tkachuck's garbage son and can't replace him in any way? Even though their division is awful, they can still make the playoffs, and that is usually enough for some teams, but it is also a great way to end up in Nowheresville with nothing but some loose memories of nothing that matters.
That wasn't the end of an intriguing Free Agency Eve, as Palat took a leaf out of Malkin's book and said he will be testing the market. It was always going to happen when the Lightning couldn't keep their Cup-winning depth together. Palat has been the do-it-all forward who pops in the biggest moments, and while his loss won't be a death blow to the Lightning, his removal fromTampa takes them from scary monster to mere contender.
NHL free agency rarely waits around this time of year. You wonder about tampering, but that is for the old crowd to worry about. Palat could be the final piece for a team that thinks they are on the verge. The best part of free agency is when we can put hockey back in the bag.
I always like to see a great team goal. Austin FC string together seven passes here that cover the entire length of the field for their third goal to cap off a 3-1 win over Houston.
Ask people why they like to watch soccer and they will tell you that it is for things like this. The point of classical music is that several people with different job descriptions blend together to create something that sounds like a tuning fork. Tin Cup is my name. What do you think about it?
