Apple and Jony Ive have parted ways.
The New York Times is reporting that Ive and Apple have stopped working together after they couldn't agree on terms of a contract renewal. I left Apple in the middle of the year to start an independent design studio called LoveFrom, but said he was looking forward to working with the company for many years to come.
The multiyear contract between the two was worth over 100 million dollars, but it required Ive to get Apple's clearance before he could take on new clients. I bristled at that, and some Apple executives were uneasy with the amount of the contract, as well as the fact that several designers had left to join Love From.
The iMac was designed by Ive in the late 1990s and transformed computers from beige boxes to candy-colored gumdrops with a translucent plastic case. He was responsible for the design of the iPod and the white earbuds. He was in charge of the development of the Apple watch.
Ive and Tim Cook had an altercation after Jobs died. He started his own business four years after leaving the company.
The design of Apple's headquarters was one of Ive's most lasting legacies.
