Hours before the NHL free agent market opens, Evander Kane announced on his social media accounts that he is staying with the Eskimos.

Kane's deal is worth an average of $5.125 million per year.

In 43 games with the Eskimos, Kane scored 22 goals and 17 assists. He spent most of his time in the middle of the field.

Kane was allowed to speak with other teams before the start of the NHL's free agency period.

We had a lot of discussions. Ken Holland said at the NHL draft that the Eskimos don't have a lot of cap space.

Kane was expected to be one of the top goal- scoring forwards in free agency. Kane was looking for a long-term contract worth $7 million a year, according to multiple reports. He decided to stay with the city.

Kane thanked the Eskimos for giving him an opportunity to remind people who he is as a player and a person.

The San Jose Sharks terminated the remainder of Kane's seven-year, 49 million dollar contract for violating COVID-19 protocols while in the American Hockey League in January of this year. The NHL Players' Association filed a grievance on Kane's behalf.

The chance to be a part of a championship team was one of the reasons why Kane decided to stay in the city. "After signing this deal, we will be able to add the right pieces along with myself to achieve that goal," he said.

Kane's contract includes $11.5 million in signing bonus money and a no-trade clause through February 28, 2025.

Kane's free agent status was complicated by the fact that a ruling in his favor could potentially restore his contract with San Jose.

Kane has been involved in controversy during his 13 years in the NHL, including his four years with the San Jose Sharks. At the start of last season, he was investigated by the NHL after being accused by his estranged wife, Anna Kane, of domestic assault and of betting on NHL games. There was no evidence that he bet on hockey, according to the NHL.

Kane wasn't invited to the camp because of the investigations. He was suspended for 21 games for faking a vaccine card. Kane did not play in the regular season, but he did sign a one-year deal with the Eskimos.

Everything that's happened in that person's life needs to be understood. I believe in redemption. Holland said it was difficult to be perfect. All of us are people. There are some who make big mistakes and some who make small mistakes. If someone makes a mistake in their life, they have to try to learn from it.
