  • The police are running from the man and stopping for hand sanitizer.

In security footage obtained and released by the American-Statesman and KVUE, police can be seen loitering in a hallway for more than 77 minutes and running away from the shooter.

One officer wearing a helmet and a vest paused to use a hallway hand-sanitizer shortly before he and his colleagues entered the classroom and killed the shooter.

A four-minute video, which condenses video clips from inside and outside the school during the May 24 shooting, shows the shooter crashing his truck on school property before entering the building. As he walked through the hallway, a young student could be seen rounding a corner and running away as the man with the gun entered the classroom. Two and a half minutes later, the man can be heard shooting inside the classroom.

More than two dozen officers, some in tactical gear, are waiting for more than an hour outside the classroom while the shooter is barricaded inside. The officers ran away from the classroom after hearing the shots. Children and teachers begged for help while they waited.

Nineteen fourth- graders and two teachers were killed.

The release of the video has been the subject of intense scrutiny and debate, as Uvalde police have changed their story more than a dozen times.

"That video needs to be released, as well as the audio," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in an interview on Monday. The Texans need to be aware. The people of Uvalde need to know what happened. I want it to happen very fast.

The chairman of the special Texas House committee investigating the shooting said on his verified account that the footage would be released next Sunday.

The committee will meet in Uvalde at 2PM on Sunday. We will give members of the community an opportunity to see the hallway video and discuss our preliminary report after meeting with them. We will make both available to the public very soon.
